Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter and actress, Mrs. Onyeka Onwenu has passed away.
Ms. Onyeka Onwenu reportedly collapsed during a performance at the birthday party of Mrs. Stella Okoli on Tuesday night and died at Reddington Hospital in Lagos.
The sad news of Onyeka Onwenu’s death was confirmed to TheNiche by an eyewitness who was present at the ceremony.
“It is very sad. Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu had just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024) when she collapsed after the performance. “She was rushed to Reddington Hospital but could not return,” an anonymous witness told the newspaper.
News Central TV reported that the well-known music icon fell ill during a private event and collapsed at Reddington Hospital in Lagos. A source close to the family said Onyeka Onwenu had attended a friend’s birthday party where she took to the stage to perform. Shortly after returning to her seat, she suddenly collapsed. Paramedics arrived quickly and rushed her to Victoria Island Hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The cause of death is yet to be confirmed.
Born on January 31, 1952, Onyeka Onwenu was a multi-talented artist whose career spanned four decades. As well as being a renowned singer and songwriter, she was also an actress, journalist and politician. Onyeka Onwenu’s music mixes genres such as highlife, reggae and pop and often deals with social and political themes. Her most popular songs include “One Love”, “Iyogogo” and “Ekwe”.
The late singer, who was dubbed an “elegant stud” by the Nigerian press, was once the chairman of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture. She was appointed as the trustee and executive director of the National Women’s Development Centre in 2013.
